Definition: Materials in house refers to all components arriving in the factory storage room before PCB SMT process and product assembly can start.

What is constituent of Materials in House components?

    • Electrical parts Bill of Materials (BOM)
    • Mechanical parts Bill of Materials (BOM)
    • Modules that needs to be hand assembled into the product such as screws, Antenna and display module, etc.
    • Printed Circuit Boards (PCB)

How can one keep track of materials?

Schematic capture tool can generate a Bill of Materials for Electrical and SMT Mechanical parts. All these parts usually have following attributes: part number, part description, manufacturer part number, and quantity. One also needs to combine computer generated EE BOM with separately order mechanical parts and modules.

This can be handled using a produdct life management (PLM) system.

How to keep a lean material in house storage?

BOM consolidation is a scrutinizing steps to for electrical engineers to use same manufacturer part number for repeated parts as well as reduce unnecessary components value, tolerance, etc. that does not change circuit behaviors.

Most of BOM consolidation is done for passive components, capacitors, resistors, and inductors.
